In the 2nd week of the school holidays, Jay Yue Tan of Room 15 competed in the South Island Badminton Junior Teams and Individual Championships.
Jay Yue's team, U13 Canterbury Black, came 1st in the team event.
Jay Yue got 1st in U13 Boys Doubles and U13 Mixed Doubles, and 2nd in Boys Singles.
Emma and Madison from Room 14 caught up with Jay to ask him about his success:
"How did you feel before the competition?"
I was not nervous, just excited.
"What’s the hardest part about training for badminton, and how do you keep going when it gets tough?"
The hardest part is keeping up with my training. I show perseverance by just going and doing it, even when I am tired.
"What do you think makes you a good player? Is there anything special you do before a big game?"
Putting in effort and training makes you a good player. The special thing I do is believe in myself.
"Who inspires you to keep playing and get better? Do you have a favourite badminton player or coach?"
My brother and my family inspire me to keep playing and get better. I also look up to the Olympic gold medal badminton player, Viktor Axelsen.
"What advice would you give to someone who wants to start playing badminton or maybe even win a competition like you?"
Actually try and give it a go. Think positive in your games and focus!
Lets go Jay!
