A group of our Year 8 Pasifika and Māori students have been attending sessions at Fale Eke based around raising STEAM as a career pathway for our Pasifika and Māori students.
The group has participated in 2 out of 4 sessions. The first session focussed on story telling of Pasifika stories and the students then used Makerspaces to create digital representations of the stories they had learnt about. They were using coding, research and story telling on a digital platform.
The second session focussed on traditional symbols and motifs; these were then drawn on iPads to be laser cut into key rings or art works. There was also a focus on creating a design on Canva to be printed on to a tote bag.
Lots of really rich discussion was had around digital technologies as future career pathways as well as how they can use it in every day life. The final two sessions will see our students creating a movie as well as looking into climate change and how technology can be used with this.
There will be another opportunity for the next batch of Year 8's in the second half of the year.
