Below is information for whanau about the Specialist music program that is run at Burnside High School.
Specialist Music Programme in 2025 is now open for Burnside High School. We have already received many applications so no doubt some of you are well aware of this, however I wanted to ensure that everyone has access to the information in a timely manner.
The Specialist Music Programme (SMP) is essentially an extension-type experience for talented and high-achieving musicians who wish to maintain and develop their musical passion throughout their time at high school. It provides a unique opportunity for these students to work alongside others with the same passion and provides a level of experience and tuition that is significantly more advanced than is found within our general music programme. There are currently around 90 students in the programme, spread across every year level. Outside of SMP there are around 500 students involved in music here, either studying music courses or participating in our extensive co-curricular programme; this includes a full Symphony Orchestra, Symphonic Band, Jazz Big Band, Funk and Contemporary Bands, Jazz Combos, and four choirs.
Attached is a copy of this year's application pack, including full detailed instructions on how to apply. All this information and more can also be found on the SMP website: http://specialistmusicprogramme.co.nz/burnside-high-school
There are two opportunities to audition - in May and July of this year.
Students accepted into the programme are guaranteed a place at Burnside High School, regardless of whether they live in the school's enrolment zone or not.
For those students with a musical interest but not at the high level required for SMP, we also offer a Performance Music course for Year 9 students; however this is only open to students living within the school's enrolment zone.
The Burnside High School Open Evening is being held on Tuesday 14th May; details of how to register for the Principal's address can be found on the school website: https://www.burnside.school.nz/
