Year 8 students made a waka out of clay.
Student’s had to draw out a design they wanted on their waka, considering what patterns and mark making techniques they would use.
The 1st step was to make the base shape of the waka out of clay. Students tested designs and patterns on a little piece of clay to see if they liked how it looked and if it related to them and their culture. When their design was completed they transferred it to the real thing by using a range of tools and techniques. After drying in the kiln room they scrape off the dust and extra pieces then use tools to re-shape it if anything broke.
Work was left to dry for two weeks and then bisque fired in the kiln. Next comes colour and glazing. Students are enjoying the process and it’s wonderful to be back in the art room using such a great resource.
