On Wednesday the 17th of May, Room 1 went on a class trip to the water pumping station and South Brighton Beach, as part of their inquiry study on sustainability.
We visited the water pumping station first and learnt about the water cycle and how much water people use in various parts of the world. “My favourite activity was where our group was given a certain amount of water and we had to ration it out for our family to use over a day,” said Alisa. Room 1 also got to see where and how the city water is pumped.
After lunch we travelled to South Brighton Beach to learn about coastal management. We learnt about how the coastline has moved in the past 9000 years; 6000 years ago the coastline was 6kms inland and 3000 years ago it was 3kms out to sea from where it is now.
Room 1 also learnt about ways to protect the sand dunes. Groups built their own mini sand dune and then constructed different types of protection for them.
The students of Room 1 will now apply their newly learnt information to their learning and continue to further their knowledge of sustainability of our planet.
