Two weeks ago, Casebrook welcomed 32 Korean students and nine Korean teachers!
Most classes have had two Korean students in their classroom so that the students could learn about life at Casebrook Intermediate and we could learn about life in Korea! But only a few classrooms got to have the Korean teachers.
These classrooms got to experience fun activities that the Korean teachers had thoughtfully planned for us! Each classroom that hosted the teachers got to have three Korean culture lessons.
My class (Room 4) had Yu Geonhee to teach us about mascots and let us design our own. We also had Kim Hoseok and Kim Sua!
Kim Hoseok taught us about New Zealand’s 6.25 troop dispatch and relationship with Korea, while Kim Sua taught us about popular sports in New Zealand and Korea. In these activities we got to play some fun and challenging games like Gonggi and Jegichaggi. We were even lucky enough to be gifted with one of these to take home and practice.
In the lesson with Kim Hoseok we designed some T-shirts with inspirational messages to the troops of Korea and New Zealand.
We went around and interviewed some of these lucky classes. We found out that the majority of the classrooms enjoyed learning about the traditional Korean games, which was taught by Lee Seoungkyoung! The classes also really enjoyed the free food, and the lesson “Comparison of differences between Korean school meals and New Zealand school meals”, which was taught by Jeong Migyeong!
Learning about Korean culture was fun and engaging! We learned about popular sports in NZ and Korea! We also learnt about Korea and NZ’s friendship. It's quite fascinating how NZ and Korea’s history is so intertwined! Overall, I don’t know anyone that disliked these sessions. Personally, my favourite one was designing the mascots. If I had the choice to do all of these again, I would say yes with no hesitation.
We wish these teachers all the best and are really grateful for our experience with them.
