Room 2 and 3 were visited by a Labour MP (Dan Rosewarne) and a National MP (Matt Doocey)
On the 18th and 19th of September, Room 2 and 3 were visited by a Labour MP (Dan Rosewarne) and a National MP (Matt Doocey). Previous to this Room 2 and 3 were taught all about what the MMP (Mixed Member Proportional) system is and who uses it.
Within a MMP system you get to choose a Party vote and an electoral vote. In fact NZ has a democratic system so that everyone gets a chance to vote for who they want as the Prime Minister. In our class vote (as shown here) Labour won with 16 votes followed by Greens with 9 votes, National with 7 votes, Act with 5, Maori with 3, NZ first with 2, and finally Top with 1 vote. Most people were very surprised about the results in our class. For our electoral vote (also shown here) out of (Matt and Dan) Dan won with 68.3% of votes.
Here we interviewed Braden from Room 2 to see what he thought about the MP’s visiting. We first asked ‘What do you think about the MP’s coming to our school?’ Braden replied that he thought it was really cool that they wanted to talk to a bunch of Year 7s and 8s and that he learnt a lot about what their perspectives were.
We then asked him what the best part about it was. Braden answered with Dan being able to introduce himself to our classes with his pepeha and then talking to us about what we have learnt. We also asked Braden who he liked more out of Matt and Dan? Braden said Dan because of what he did to start being part of the government and how he went into the army. Then he got diagnosed with leukaemia and the government helped him out with his medical bills and then he became an MP. We really enjoyed having the MP’s in our classroom and we all hope for another classroom to do this same lesson that we did.
