Shave for a Cure

By Emily Foot | Posted: Monday April 3, 2017

I don't know why I chose to do the shave for a cure.  But what I do know is that I'm doing it for a very good cause.

There are many different charities doing it.  Take Kids Cancer Care or the Child Cancer Foundation for example, but I'm doing it for Leukemia and Blood Cancer NZ.  Shave for a cure is fundraiser for the leukemia and blood cancer foundation and has been running for fifteen years and it's still going strong with 1,205 shaves as of the 26th of March and counting, for 2017. The fundraising helps the six people across New Zealand diagnosed everyday with a blood cancer or other related conditions by funding research into better treatments and a cure. The charity also offers support services for patients and families, and they provide information about blood cancers and related conditions. In fact, they are the greatest provider of information in New Zealand.

I opened my fundraising page a month ago and have had great support from people that I'm involved with in the community and friends; even the friends who love my hair to pieces and thinks it's gorgeous.  At this stage I have already done the shave and I have raised almost $400.  But I have not let my hair go to waste.  I will be sending it off to Freedom wigs in Dunedin to make human hair wigs for women that have either Alopecia Areata, Alopecia Totalis or Alopecia Universalis.  All of these are conditions which induce hair loss.
