Sexuality Education is part of The New Zealand Curriculum, and it is a requirement that it is taught as part of the PE and Health learning area from Years 1-10.
The purpose of Sexuality Education is to provide students with the knowledge, understanding and skills to develop positive attitudes towards sexuality, to take care of their sexual health, and wellbeing and to enhance their interpersonal relationships, now and in the future.
Your child will be taught using a programme Navigating the Journey - Relationships and Sexuality Education, developed by Family Planning. The following themes will be covered:
Establishing a positive learning environment
Who am I?
Relationships
Growing and Changing
Staying Safe
You are welcome to contact myself or your child’s classroom teacher to discuss the programme or to clarify any other questions you may have. Further information can be found through the Navigating the Journey - Relationships and Sexuality Education Parent & Whānau Guide: https://www.familyplanning.org.nz/media/304754/a4_ntj-for-parents_2021.pdf
Sexuality Education is a valuable part of a child’s learning, so we hope all students will be present for this programme. However, if you do not wish your child to participate, please let the Principal know, in writing, before the programme starts. Classroom teachers will be teaching the programme between Weeks 7 and 8 of this term (starting Monday 6th September).
Prior to classroom teaching beginning, a whānau evening will be held in the staff room on Wednesday 25th August from 6.00 pm - 6.30 pm. This meeting will inform parents/caregivers on the content of the programme and allow you to view the teaching materials. It will also provide valuable information to help you navigate through this interesting period in your child’s life.
We look forward to working with the students through this exciting programme and hope that you take the opportunity to have many interesting discussions at home regarding the content of the programme your child will be taught in the coming weeks.
