Casebrook Has An Orchard!

We are very excited to announce that Casebrook has planted a new orchard.

We have joined The Canterbury Horticultural Society’s “Orchards for School” programme and they have generously donated 16 fruit trees and provided us with the wonderful services of Mary Tingey from “A Place of Learning” who has advised and supported us through the planning and planting stages. She will also assist us with pruning and advice and care for the trees in the future.

Students have learnt to plant and stake each tree to give it the best start for optimum growth.

Mr Cook’s Maths class applied their scale drawing skills to develop a orchard planting design that suited best the areas features.

The students made a measuring tool to measure the circumference around each tree using a 1.5 metre radius from the planted tree.

The Edible garden students are going to underplant each tree until the tree canopy grows.

Our goal is to provide a sustainable solution that teaches our students valuable life skills and in the future will give them access to fresh and healthy food at school.

The students are conscious of the importance of the orchards role in making a contribution to help mitigate climate change by removing carbon dioxide from the air, and releasing oxygen into the atmosphere.
